Dymphna was the daughter of a pagan Irish king and a Christian mother. She was baptized in secret and, as a girl, promised herself to Christ. When her mother died, her father's grief turned into something darker. He wanted to marry his daughter, who looked so much like his wife. Dymphna refused and fled, with an old priest named Gerebernus, across the sea to Antwerp and then inland to the village of Geel. Her father tracked them there. He had Gerebernus killed, and when Dymphna still would not go back with him, he beheaded her himself. The 1946 account kept by the National Shrine puts her death between the years 620 and 640 and says she was fifteen.",[15,19,20],{},"How much of this happened, no one can say. The earliest written life of Dymphna was composed in the 1240s by Pierre, a canon of the church of St. Aubert in Cambrai, at the request of his bishop, Guy I. Pierre says plainly that he wrote down what people in Geel told him. The Catholic Encyclopedia, written by a careful Church historian, calls the narrative \"without any historical foundation\" and points out that the king who wants to marry his own daughter is a common motif in folk tales. Franciscan Mission Associates gives 1247 as the year of her canonization, which is the same period as Pierre's life of her; there was no formal canonization process then, and the date marks the approval of a cult already in place.",[15,22,23],{},"What is not in doubt is the devotion. A church stood at Geel in her honor long before Pierre wrote. It burned in 1489; the one that replaced it was consecrated in 1532 and still stands. Inside are fragments of two ancient stone coffins and a brick with the letters DYMPNA, which tradition says were found with the bodies of Dymphna and Gerebernus. His bones were later taken to Xanten in Germany. It grew. From the earliest years of her cult, the Catholic Encyclopedia says, she was \"invoked as patroness against insanity,\" and the Bollandists, the Jesuit scholars who collect the records of the saints, published accounts of cures at Geel, most of them between 1604 and 1668. People with mental illness were brought to her church to pray and to be prayed over. Many were left there. The town took them in.",[15,32,33],{},"That is the other reason Catholics pray to her: the people of Geel showed what prayer to Dymphna looks like when it is put into practice. For centuries, families in the town housed people with mental illness as members of the household. They ate at the family table and worked on the farm, and they were watched over, the Encyclopedia says, \"without being aware of it.\" At times as many as fifteen hundred people lived this way in Geel. The practice continues today under medical supervision, and in 2023 UNESCO placed Geel's family foster care on its Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.",[15,35,36],{},"So when a Catholic asks St. Dymphna to pray for a racing mind, a panic attack at 3 a.m., a depression that will not lift, or a son or daughter whose illness has taken over the house, she is asking a saint whose whole history is bound up with exactly that suffering, and with a community that answered it with patience rather than fear. If you can visit, the shrine at St. Mary Church has a first-class relic for veneration. Pilgrims have gone to Geel itself on her feast and on the Tuesday after Pentecost for as long as records exist.",[15,45,46],{},"Say the prayer below once, slowly, and then tell her in your own words what is wrong.
