Her father was a physician; her mother died when she was three. On January 25, 1794, at nineteen, she married William Magee Seton, a merchant, and in seven years they had five children: Anna Maria, William, Richard, Catherine and Rebecca. The Seton Shrine's biography says that after her father-in-law died in 1798 she also took in her husband's younger half-siblings, and that the family firm went bankrupt in 1801. They lost everything, including their home. William began to show signs of tuberculosis as the money ran out.",[15,19,20],{},"In 1803 Elizabeth, William and eight-year-old Anna Maria sailed for Italy, hoping the climate would save him. The port of Livorno, afraid of yellow fever from New York, locked them in a cold stone quarantine for a month. Two weeks after his release, on December 27, 1803, William died in Pisa and was buried in the English cemetery at Livorno. Elizabeth was twenty-nine by the shrine's count, thirty by Franciscan Media's, and the mother of five children, the eldest eight, with no money.",[15,22,23],{},"The Filicchi family, her husband's Italian business friends, took her in. Through them she met the Catholic faith: the Mass, the Real Presence, the Church's unbroken line to the apostles. She went home, the shrine says, \"with the heart of a Roman Catholic,\" and on March 14, 1805, she made her profession of faith at St. Peter's Church in lower Manhattan. Paul VI, canonizing her, spoke of \"how much it cost Elizabeth to pass over to the Catholic Church.\" Family and friends turned against her. In 1808 she moved to Baltimore, and in June 1809 to Emmitsburg, Maryland, where the community began in the Stone House on July 31, 1809, as the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's, the first community of religious women founded in the United States. The free school she opened there in 1810 and the academy beside it formed, in the shrine's words, \"the cradle of Catholic education in the United States.\"",[15,25,26],{},"The deaths did not stop. Anna Maria, who had been with her in Italy, died of tuberculosis in 1812, at sixteen, after taking vows as a Sister of Charity on her deathbed. Rebecca, the youngest, had fallen on ice. The shrine's biography says a hip injury left her lame and she died of tuberculosis in 1816; a later shrine article says the fall injured her back or spine and was not recognized until too late. Elizabeth, by the shrine's count, buried eighteen of her sisters at Emmitsburg as well as two daughters and two sisters-in-law. She died there on January 4, 1821, at forty-six. John XXIII beatified her on March 17, 1963, and Paul VI canonized her in St. Peter's Square on September 14, 1975, calling her \"the first daughter of the United States of America to be glorified with this incomparable attribute.\"",[10,28,30],{"id":29},"why-catholics-pray-to-st-elizabeth-ann-seton-in-grief","Why Catholics pray to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in grief",[15,32,33],{},"No pope has named her patron of the grieving. She had children to feed and later a community to run.",[15,35,36],{},"She was honest about what grief did to her. The Seton Shrine quotes a letter written after Anna Maria's death: \"For three months after Nina was taken, I was so often expecting to lose my senses and my head was so disordered.\" She did not pretend that faith made the loss light. The same shrine article records that she held Rebecca day and night for nine weeks, because the girl's \"pains could find no relief or solace but in her own poor Mother.\"",[15,38,39],{},"What a Catholic asks her for is concrete: to get through the next month, to keep praying when prayer feels like talking to a wall, to care for the living children while grieving the dead one, to accept help. Her two central devotions, Franciscan Media says, were surrender to God's will and love for the Blessed Sacrament, and both were learned in the quarantine at Livorno and at her daughters' bedsides, not in a chapel at peace.
