Her father was president of the Parliament of Burgundy. In 1592, at twenty, she married the Baron de Chantal and went to live at his castle of Bourbilly; Franciscan Media makes her twenty-one. The sources count her children differently. The Catholic Encyclopedia says she was left with four children. Franciscan Media says she bore six, three of whom died in infancy. Either way she was a young mother with a full house when, in 1601, her husband was shot. The Encyclopedia says he was \"accidentally killed by a harquebus while out shooting\"; Franciscan Media says only that he was killed after seven years of marriage. She was twenty-eight.",[15,19,20],{},"Grief did not take her to a convent. It took her to her father-in-law's house at Monthelon, where, the Encyclopedia says, the old man \"was ruled over by an arrogant and wicked servant.\" It calls this \"real servitude,\" and she bore it for seven years, raising her children and holding to a private vow not to marry again. In Lent of 1604, visiting her father in Dijon, she heard a visiting bishop preach. It was Francis de Sales. She recognized him, the Encyclopedia says, as the director she had been shown in a vision, and put herself under his guidance. Franciscan Media adds that he made her wait. He would not let her rush into religious life while her children were small, and she vowed instead to remain unmarried and to obey him.",[15,22,23],{},"The order they founded came out of that patience. The Visitation of Holy Mary was canonically established at Annecy on Trinity Sunday, June 6, 1610, and Pope Francis, writing on Francis de Sales in 2022, still names \"his encounter with Jane Frances de Chantal and the foundation of the Order of the Visitation in 1610\" among the fruits of the bishop's life. The Visitation was made for women the other orders could not take: young women and widows, the Encyclopedia says, who could not endure the austere penances common at the time. Benedict XVI described its spirit as \"total consecration to God lived in simplicity and humility, in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.\" Franciscan Media notes that the first plan, an active community visiting the sick and poor, drew opposition, and the sisters were made cloistered under the Rule of St. Augustine.",[15,25,26],{},"Jane outlived her co-founder by nineteen years. When Francis de Sales died in 1622 there were thirteen houses; when she died there were eighty-six. In those years, Franciscan Media records, she also buried her son, lived through a plague, and lost a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law. She died at the Visitation convent of Moulins on December 13, 1641, while visiting the order's houses. She was beatified in 1751 and canonized in 1767, by which time the Visitation had 164 houses. She did not get to be a nun. She got to be a widow in someone else's house, with young children, in a house run by a servant who made life hard.",[15,35,36],{},"The second reason is said less often. The Encyclopedia reports that her family troubles \"were compounded by interior crosses,\" and that \"particularly during the last nine years of her life\" they kept her \"in agony of soul from which she was not freed until three months before her death.\" Franciscan Media calls it spiritual darkness and dryness, and draws the lesson plainly: \"the life of faith is still one that is lived in trust.\" A founder of eighty-six convents, the spiritual daughter of St. Francis de Sales, went through years in which God felt absent. If that is where you are, she has been there.",[15,38,39],{},"So a Catholic asks her to pray for what she needed herself: the strength to keep the household going when the person who held it is gone, patience with the slow timetable God seems to keep, the ability to pray when prayer feels empty, and the kind of friend Francis de Sales was to her.",[10,41,43],{"id":42},"how-to-pray-to-st-jane-frances-de-chantal","How to pray to St. Jane Frances de Chantal",[15,45,46],{},"Pray to her any day.
